The grade III dressmaking skilled assessment guideline is developed to test competencies of persons engaged in the garment making industry to perform simple tasks. Persons at this level of competency must demonstrate knowledge and ability to draft and cut patterns, lay out patterns on the material/ fabrics and apply finishing touches on ladies’ garments.A gradeIII person is a semi-skilled artisan with knowledge of techniques and use of appropriate tools which are needed to perform a job with efficiency and understanding.The level requires the artisan to have basic principles and good understanding of safety procedures, tools, equipment and materials in order to perform the desired quality standards and to minimize production costs. The artisan at this level should be able to interpret a given design, cut and assemble various female garments such as tunic, two-piece dress, petticoat, girls’ dresses and straight skirts.The major areas of functional competency at this level will be to interpret a given design, cut and assemble female garments.Areas of functional competency includes: Work place safety procedures, Tools and equipment, Pattern drafting of casual female garments, Production of female garments.

Persons at this level of competence have useful skills which are required for the performance of tasks applicable in the trade. A grade ii person is a skilled artisan with knowledge of techniques and use of appropriate tools which are needed to perform a job with efficiency and understanding. The level requires the artisan to have knowledge and understanding of safety procedures, tools, equipment and materials in order to perform desired quality, standards and minimize on production cost.The artisan at this stage should be able to design various garment styles, interpret them, draft, cut and assemble garments for ladies and girls. The garments include blouse, panel skirt, pleated skirt, night gown, lined waistcoats, culottes and trouser and their variations.The major areas of competency for this level will be to design, interpret, draft and produce various female garments: Tools, equipment and safety, Designing and pattern drafting, Production of various garments.

Persons at this level of competence must demonstrate knowledge and ability to design, draft patterns, cut and assemble complicated tailored ladies formal, casual and occasional garments.The person at this level of competence must be able to interpret design details, sketch, draft patterns, select fabric for various styles, cut out various types of fabrics, assemble and apply finishing touches on ladies formal, casual and occasional garments using a variety of special tools, equipment, attachments and trimmings.A person who has achieved this level is competent to be a pattern cutter, fashion designer, garment stylist, fashion stylist and fashion advisor. The artisan should demonstrate an understanding of occupational health and safety and minimizing on production costs in all operations.The major areas of competency for this level will be to design, interpret given patterns, layout patterns on a variety of fabrics/ materials, cut and assemble fashionable complicated ladies formal, casual and occasional garments using a variety of fabrics.Basic areas of functional competency includes: Workplace safety procedures, Special tools, equipment, attachments and aids, Design and sketching, Pattern production and Production of garments.
